NEC Class 2 Units, Power Supplies, and AC to DC adapters

Class 2 is a designation by the National Electrical Code, or NEC, in the United States. The NEC Class 2 Designation is required by many state and local building codes for external power supplies used in building electrical systems and is typically looked for during inspection of new construction. Class 2 power supply regulations provide a standard for wiring requirements (wire size and insulation, wire derating factors, overcurrent protection limits and methods of wiring installation) between the output of the AC to DC power supply and the input of the load, or system powering it. The limited output voltage and power output capabilities of NEC Class 2 power units or power supplies are considered to be a lower risk of fire and electrical shock, which may allow for lower cost building wiring and designs to be implemented in new construction. AC DC Power supplies and adapters designated as NEC Class 2 power units are available for ITE(Information technology Equipment) as defined by and certified to IEC/UL/EN 60950-1 and ICT (Information and communications technology) as defined by and certified to IEC/UL/EN 62368-1 are offered in multiple power levels, voltages, wattages, and packages. Such AC DC adapters and power supplies are intended for use in general electronics applications such as computers, telecom equipment, audio/video equipment, and countless others.
