EISA 2007

The U.S. Congress has passed a law effective July 1, 2008 called the “Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007”. Section 301 of the new law is dedicated to the efficiency standards for AC or DC output external power supplies 250 watts and under. The law states that any Class A external power supply manufactured on or after July 1, 2008, must meet new, higher efficiency and standby levels based on the output watts.

Effective March 1, 2007
Standard Code SJ/T 11363-2006 "Requirements for concentration limit for certain hazardous substances" and SJ/T 11364-2006 "Marking for control of pollution caused by electronic information" otherwise known as "China RoHS", restriction of hazardous materials, is in effect and covering all electronic products. China RoHS legislation is largely equivalent to the European RoHS Directive, but does entail certain differences, which seem more demanding than the EU rules in some respects. The main difference is that there are no exceptions as there are in European RoHS such as Lead allowable in steel up to 0.35, aluminum 0.4, copper alloy 4%, etc. The Marking of "E" in green color or orange color with necessary information on Electronic Information product is mandatory. GlobTek products largely meet the directive and appropriate documentation and marking has been implemented to meet the deadline of March 1, 2007. GlobTek to Offer Products in Compliance with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Starting Q2 2005
GlobTek announces its commitment to the EU Directive 2002/95/EC Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) which was implemented on July 1st 2006. GlobTek is committed to be in compliance with all applicable laws and safety regulations including the European Union Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. This directive will restrict the use of Lead (Pb), Mercury, Cadmium, Hexavalent Chromium and two Bromine-containing flame retardants, PBB (Polybrominated Biphenyls) and PBDE (Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers), in electrical and electronic products. GlobTek’s goal is to exceed compliance obligations by meeting the requirements of the RoHS Directive on a worldwide basis. Today, all product families are available as RoHS.

WEEE DIRECTIVE 2002/96/EC of the European Union
The Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive. This directive is aimed at reducing waste of electrical and electronic equipment and promoting reuse and recycling of the equipment by establishing the target of reuse and recycling as a percentage of weight. GlobTek’s customers typically export to the European Union and in anticipation of GlobTek’s customer’s forthcoming compliance with WEEE the “trash can” logo has been added to all products suitable for use in Europe. The “trash can” symbology readily available on GlobTek products will allow customer’s to quickly comply with WEEE marking requirements as the power supply, a main component is marked in compliance. Customers should familiarize themselves with the WEEE directive as the requirements for reuse and recycling of GlobTek’s products which ship attached to final systems will be the responsibility of the manufacturer of the system or the importer into the European Union. Also, marking on the power supply alone is not enough to comply with WEEE.

In reference to Medical Products and Medical Grade power supplies:
Recovery and reuse and recycling limits for medical products will be established by December 31, 2008. Currently, the Restriction of the Use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS) Directive (2002/95/EC) does not require the medical industry to follow this requirement. However, the European Commission may revisit this exception by February 13, 2005. The RoHS Directive states that it “. . . shall ensure that, from 1 July 2006, new electrical and electronic equipment put on the market does not contain lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls (PBB), or polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE)."
